I admit it. I have a lot of pet peeves. I’m generally a positive person and appreciative of the beauty of our world and the beauty within others, but some things really tick me off. One of those is how incredibly horrible it is for job seekers to search for and especially apply to jobs using their cell phones and other mobile devices. Quite simply, the candidate experience is atrocious.

My friends, Mark Mehler and Gerry Crispin of CareerXroads, recently released a new white paper on how employers are using mobile recruitment market. The verdict: some progress but a whole lot of room for improvement. The white paper was based on a survey of human resource executives from large organizations and builds on a similar survey conducted two years earlier. Do Job Boards Still Matter?

Yes, job boards still matter.  They are a convenient method of searching the latest job postings or different categories such as job title or location.  While new recruiting strategies such as social media and mobile may come into play, job boards can incorporate them to help people find jobs.  As a result, you would expect job boards to have more success by expanding their audiences to those who use social media and mobile devices. Below is the first eight minutes, 39 seconds of my presentation on mobile marketing at the 15th Minnesota Recruiters conference. The conference was held on November 8, 2011 at the General Mills world headquarters in suburban Minneapolis, Minnesota. About 230 recruiters, hiring managers, and other human resource professionals attended.

September marks the start of the 2012 fall frenzy of conferences, niche conferences, un-conferences, expos, seminars, webinars, (and yes, a Colloquium or two). Not every session at every event offers deep dives but the mobile discussion has been noted everywhere this year. One conference, held in mid-September, the second mRecruitingCamp, was totally devoted to the subject. (Michael Marlatt did an excellent job on this one-day niche event.)

Practitioners offering solid case study insights on mobile technology and recruiting included Matt Lavery [UPS], Chris Hoyt [PepsiCo] and Heather Tinguely [Microsoft]. We encourage you to look for their videos. Bottom line, a rapidly increasing percentage of prospects in their pipelines (prospects who are eventually hired) are engaged and in more and more cases applying through mobile devices. (more…)
