Preparing young women for gender inequality in the workplace

Career Resources Specialist Laveda Joseph has been noticing that at Wake Technical Community College, her female students are often unaware of the gender inequality that exists in the “real” world. Despite recent momentum toward equal pay, and the #MeToo movement, Joseph doesn’t see awareness increasing on campus. Anne Tomkinson, Senior Manager of Human Resources and Operations at D.C. Public Charter School Board, shares Joseph’s passion for helping young women prepare for the realities of the workplace. That’s not to say they accept status quo. On the contrary—the advice they share here should help young women advocate for themselves, build their confidence, and understand how to react when faced with inequality.

Title VII protects LGBT employee rights

LGBT employees now have protection when it comes to their rights in the workplace. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, or EEOC, determined that since Title VII protects discrimination based on sex, employers can’t discriminate against LGBT workers concerning sexual orientation or gender identity. The determination is another step to equality in the workplace.

To help explore these issues, College Recruiter recently hosted a College Recruiting Bootcamp on LGBT and other diversity hiring issues on Tuesday, September 29, at the Twilio headquarters in San Francisco.

College Recruiter has been publishing the opinions from a number of talent acquisition and recruiting leaders about why and how employers should diversify their workforces. Marc J. LGBTQ equality in STEM workforce

A recent press release discusses a new project with the Rowan University Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering in New Jersey partnering with other universities to advance LGBTQ equality in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Research shows that STEM students and professionals are not as comfortable on campus compared to students and professionals in other fields. The project also promotes a diverse workforce in STEM fields by encouraging LGBTQ equality through recruitment efforts.

To help explore these issues, College Recruiter is hosting a College Recruiting Bootcamp on LGBT and other diversity hiring issues on Tuesday, September 29th at the Twilio headquarters in San Francisco. Join us.

When it comes to today’s workforce, there is no doubt that millennials are creating an atmosphere of change in the workplace.  So, who are millennials?  This group was born between 1980 and the year 2000, and reflect a generation with their own career goals, attitudes, and oh yes, their understanding of how to use technology.  For employers to take their companies to the next level, they will need to find ways to recruit and retain millennials, also known as Generation Y.
