We call lying as human nature simply as it is a natural instinct that we are all born with. However, how and to what extent can it get developed depends on the conditions, situations and the urge to survive. In the recruiting world, it is found evidently on resumes. One of the first questions that people with criminal records ask as they head out into the job market in search of employment is about whether or not their search is even worth it. It’s a valid query: for years, employers have blacklisted ex-convicts and even misdemeanor criminals simply for having criminal offenses on record. Even if you have served your time for a crime and are working hard to rebuild your life, a criminal record can follow you around for your whole life and force you to keep paying for your mistakes. Quite simply, most employers aren’t willing to take a risk on people with criminal history, whether because they are worried for their safety (or the safety of their customers or workers) or because they just look down upon those who have committed crimes in the past.

Why do human resources departments run background checks, and how do employers use the information obtained through such background checks to reject potential job applicants?

The first part of the question is easy: human resource departments run background checks on applicants and employees as a means of learning more information about those people. Often, it is difficult for a hiring manager to discover everything there is to learn about a person from a resume, a job application, or an interview, and a background check provides additional facts that can hold sway on a hiring decision. Investigations into an applicant’s background can also tell a human resources department whether or not the person is a good fit with the company in question, or even whether the applicant might pose a threat to the company’s employees, customers, and overall reputation.
