When you’re recruiting students for internships or recent grads for early career construction jobs, which are your favorite schools to recruit from? Here is what five thought leaders have to say.

  • Prefer Technical Institutes for Practical Training
  • Focus on Drive and Skill Over Prestige
  • Recruit from Robust Trades Programs
  • Eastern Florida State College Nurtures Talent
  • Value Practical Skills and Industry Passion

Prefer Technical Institutes for Practical Training

When recruiting students for internships and recent graduates for early-career construction jobs, I have found great success with graduates from technical institutes and universities known for strong engineering and construction programs.

Particularly, schools like the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) have consistently provided well-prepared candidates.

These institutions offer practical, hands-on training that aligns well with the real-world demands of construction and project management roles at Dayjob Recruitment, ensuring a smoother transition for new hires into the workforce.

Focus on Drive and Skill Over Prestige

In my experience, when seeking interns or fresh talent for construction roles, I focus less on specific schools and more on individuals’ drive and skill. However, I’ve noticed promising candidates from vocational schools like London South Bank University and Guildford College.

These institutions often produce candidates with practical knowledge and hands-on experience, which are invaluable in the construction industry. Ultimately, it’s about finding those with the right mix of passion and expertise.

Recruit from Robust Trades Programs

I’m the owner of a fire-protection services company operating within the construction sector, and I can say that we prioritize recruiting interns and recent graduates from schools that offer robust trades programs.

While I don’t have specific favorites, I tend to gravitate towards institutions known for their strong emphasis on practical skills and hands-on training in construction-related disciplines. These schools equip students with the technical expertise and industry-specific knowledge necessary to excel in roles within our company, whether it’s designing fire-protection systems, conducting inspections, or overseeing installations.

By tapping into talent pools from such institutions, we ensure that our team members possess a solid foundation in construction principles while also fostering a pipeline of skilled professionals who are passionate about contributing to the safety and integrity of built environments.

Eastern Florida State College Nurtures Talent

I’m also a part-time instructor at the Law Enforcement Academy at Eastern Florida State College, and I have a close relationship with the school’s faculty and students.

I’ve seen how passionate and dedicated the students at EFSC are, which is why it’s one of my favorite schools to recruit from for internships and early-career opportunities in construction.

Their thorough and hands-on curriculum gives students a well-rounded education that prepares them for real-world challenges in the construction industry. Plus, their internship programs give students firsthand experience in various aspects of construction, from project management to site supervision.

The students from EFSC have a strong work ethic and an eagerness to learn, making them valuable assets to any construction team. I’ve had the pleasure of working with several EFSC graduates, who have consistently impressed me with their skills and knowledge.

Also, as a local Melbourne-based company, we value the opportunity to support and mentor students from our community. Seeing these young professionals grow and succeed in their careers is always fulfilling.

Value Practical Skills and Industry Passion

When seeking interns or fresh talent for construction roles, I value schools with hands-on programs emphasizing practical skills. While renowned universities are appealing, I’ve found exceptional candidates at lesser-known technical institutes.

What matters most is a passion for the industry, coupled with a willingness to learn and grow. By casting a wide net and focusing on talent rather than prestige, we ensure a diverse and skilled workforce ready to tackle the challenges of the construction sector.
