Advice for Employers and Recruiters
It is a nightmare to hire part-time workers. Here’s a key reason why.
I keep hearing from employers advertising their jobs with College Recruiter that they’ve converted a large number of their part-time employees into full-time, so the employer might now have only half as many people working for them as they did a year ago when the labor market inverted. They’re doing this out of necessity as they’re unable to hire enough people on a part-time basis to keep their doors open.
Yet some of those same employers aren’t fully grasping that every employer is facing the same challenges and that the strategy of converting part-timers into full-timers has become commonplace, which further reduces the shortage of those seeking part-time work.
At the end of the day, far, far fewer people are being forced to cobble together two or even three part-time jobs, none of which offer health insurance or sick time, and instead they have one place of employment that is likely paying them more per hour and providing them with health insurance and sick time. Is it any wonder why fewer people are open to part-time work?
