As the US economy recovers from the impact of the pandemic, employers are still struggling to fully staff amid the supposed labor shortage. A potential way to combat this hiring issue is to upskill and retrain current employees. According to a study done by Gallup, upskilling and retraining can be a powerful tool to attract new talent and is a highly desired benefit for workers.

College Recruiter recently asked experts for tips for employers who wish to upskill their employees.

Here is some advice from Lars Hyland, Chief Learning Officer of Totara Learning, a provider of enterprise learning, engagement and performance management technology.

Organizations are changing how they are structured and how they support the people who work for them. The old command-and-control model is being replaced by a more networked, collaborative model that relies on distributed decision-making and more autonomy throughout the business in order to respond quickly and effectively to rapid change. The recent pandemic accelerated these trends. Many companies found they were brittle when forced to pivot to predominantly remote working, and have consequently become broken and wounded. Others could adapt more flexibly, and have even thrived. The difference in response comes down to their investments in their people and technology infrastructure. Those with effective learning and development strategies and technology they can control and adapt to meet radically different business needs as they arise, have and will prosper in the new world of work ahead.

That world requires a very different blend of skills and capabilities. So the ability to continually reskill and upskill employees, and stakeholders right through the supply chain, sales channels and even educating customers, is a strategic differentiator for any company in any sector. Since all sectors are feeling the profound effects of digitalization, smart use of technology is now a critical core skill for us all to stay relevant.

So – learning management systems, learning experience platforms, performance management systems, engagement tools are more important to the future success of the organization than ever when it comes to continually upskilling. L&D is no longer just a cost center and order taker – it is now a critical part of remaining competitive, sustaining innovation and responding to the many economic shocks ahead. The key benefits they bring is easy access to learning opportunities that are relevant to the individual, more timely feedback from managers and peers on work performance, and opportunities for people to communicate and collaborate cross-functionally, leading to faster problem solving and more impactful innovation.
