Advice for Employers and Recruiters

Ask the experts: How can employers create an attractive remote environment for young job seekers?

Right now, there are more college graduates than ever before searching for a remote work opportunity straight out of college. The COVID-19 pandemic has proved to many that their jobs can and should be done from home, forcing employers to pivot and adjust. With so many companies hiring for remote positions, what can employers do to stand out to college graduate job seekers?

At College Recruiter, we recently asked our Content Expert Board that very question. Here are some tips from Ahva Sadeghi of Symba.

  1. Remote Work Benefits. Just like how some offices have in-person perks such as coffee/espresso machines (even baristas), free lunches, games, gyms, and more, an enticing remote work environment should incorporate these benefits as well. Some examples include:
    • Work-from-home (WFH) lunch stipends
    • Coffeeshop stipend (allows employees to support local businesses, get their coffee/tea fix, and change their environment every once in a while)
    • WFH office setup, such as providing laptops, monitors, ergonomic mice and keyboards, etc
    • Flexibility for family/friends time encourages employees to step away from work and reset
  2. Social Activities and Career Growth. It can be hard to foster community and engagement as well as support career goals in a remote environment so planning these activities should be intentional. Some ideas of things you can do to promote social engagement and career growth include:
    • Retreats. These can be organized by department or region, or you could plan an annual company retreat.
    • Mentorship. This is especially important for employees who are at the beginning stages of their careers. Create a program where young talent are paired with senior employees in their department.
    • Invest in long-term career goals. Have your senior employees sit with your new hires and develop a growth plan with them that maps to their career goals (whether the trajectory is at your company or not)
  3. HR Support. Creating a remote culture that attracts young talent also needs HR support, such as:
    • Supporting visas to attract a diverse set of talent
    • Making sure healthcare benefits are equal no matter where a team member is located
    • Having a clear PTO policy/structure so employees understand when/how they can take vacations
