Advice for Employers and Recruiters

3 tips from a Franklin Pierce University professor on creating an attractive remote environment for recent college grads

College Recruiter recently asked employers for their tips on creating an attractive remote work environment. Here are three tips from Maria Minor, a professor in Franklin Pierce University’s MBA program.

  1. Connections build a sense of community, comfort, and allow employees to share and learn the “ropes” of virtual work together. Depending on the job, I suggest managers set up at least one call a day until employees are comfortable, and then lessen the frequency.   Some companies do a Zoom happy hour every Friday so employees can get to know each other. The happy hour has no formal agenda, but some have found playing games like Trivia or Pictionary a great way to help people laugh and bond.
  2. In any job feedback is essential.  Managers need to create a virtual arrangement that allows for positive and constructive feedback on a regular basis. Without feedback, one will have no way of knowing if their performance is exemplary, satisfactory, or not acceptable. A manager needs to be in contact via zoom, or phone with the virtual employee when providing feedback. Email can be used but one needs to be careful about how the message may be read. An inappropriate tone in an email can cause stress. For me, I suggest a personal touch by reaching out using video or phone so a misunderstanding of tone or message can quickly be corrected.
  3. Finally, allowing for flexibility of hours (if possible). Some employees are morning people and would love to start early in the morning and end early in the afternoon. Others may like to start late and end later in the afternoon. If the job permits time flexibility, it is an attractive benefit. This allows the employee to choose their own 8 working hours and still get the work accomplished. Another attractive feature is four 10-hour days with a 3 day weekend. Since personal time is a priority of the younger generation, this is a very attractive benefit.
