How employers of college students are replacing on-campus career events and interviews

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed to Fortune 1,000 companies, government agencies, and other employers who hire at scale that they were far too reliant on their on-campus recruiting efforts to reach the students who are the lifeblood of their internship programs and, therefore, their entry-level hiring needs and future leadership.

The almost exclusively on-campus approach to create candidate flow resulted in far too many of the wrong candidates being put into their hiring processes. With few good benchmarks against which to compare their efforts, most of these organizations also failed to realize the inefficiencies they were creating during the screening and selection, middle of the funnel, stage.

The pandemic effectively paused on-campus recruiting for the 2020-21 school year. That pause accelerated the migration from on-campus to what is often referred to as virtual recruiting sources such as job boards like College Recruiter. What many employers have discovered this year is that they’re able to hire far more efficiently (cheaper) and far more effectively (higher quality, including diversity) using virtual sourcing tools, and so most will likely never go back to almost exclusively relying on their on-campus efforts to put the right candidates into the top of the funnel so they get the right hires coming out of the bottom. Those that refuse to accept reality as it is are due for a tough time.
