When looking for a new job, you want to make the right first impression.  This is because there are likely many other job seekers competing for the opportunities you are interested in, meaning you must stand out.  As a job seeker, take the approach that everything counts.  So, what are some things to keep in mind?  The following post offers job search tips on what you should and should not do.

Focus on the goal – Before beginning your job search, think about what your goal is.  Consider things like what kind of job you want, the type of company you want to work for, the time of day you want to work, etc.  This information will guide you into making decisions when it comes to finding a job.

Fail to follow instructions – When applying for a job, make sure to follow instructions.  You may be the most qualified candidate for a position, but if a potential employer sees you did not pay attention to the job posting, then you probably will be disqualified.

Plan out your job search – What are all of the things you need to do in your quest to land a new job?  Write them down (research, resume, cover letter, etc.) and plan time to work on each activity.

Pass on proofreading – By not reviewing your job search documents, you may miss a mistake or two that could be costly.  Take time to proofread your work (and even have someone you trust do the same) so that spelling, grammar, and punctuation are correct.

Set up a work area – In order to fully focus on getting a job, it is a good idea to establish your own workspace.  Think of it as your office away from outside distractions to help you be productive.

Follow up too frequently – While a potential employer understands you eagerness to find out whether or not you will get the job, he or she does not want to be annoyed.  If there is a specific time to follow up, say after an interview, wait until that time.  Be patient, and you should get a response eventually.

Get support – As a job seeker, you can experience highs and lows.  Getting support from family and friends can keep you motivated to find a job.

As you prepare for your job search, you have an opportunity to make a great first impression and stand out from the competition.  Remember, that everything you do (or do not do) counts.  By following the tips above, you can bring yourself that much closer to a new job.  Good luck with your search!

Research shows the average worker is going to spend less than 3 years in each job — which means you’ll need to find a dozen or more jobs over the course of your career. So isn’t it a good idea to learn how to job search right? In order to become an expert at finding work, here
