Your personal and career success are going to depend on more than what you learned in college. Having the ability to motivate yourself could be more important than any knowledge you have. Since they don’t teach this in school, here are some key motivational thoughts that might help.

1. You make your life. Consider this sentence with emphasis on each important word:

· You make your life. It’s up to you, no one else.

· You make your life. It doesn’t just happen. You have to act.

· You make your life. It’s your life that’s at stake.

2. You have the power to choose the direction of your life. Don’t know which way to go? Consider your values and life goals. Also, ask yourself what you love doing and what comes naturally to you. If you’re doing what you love and what’s easy for you, working toward your goals won’t seem like work. The joy will be in the journey and the better your results will be.

3. If you need to change yourself or your situation, understand that you can change. Change starts with awareness and continues with action. Write down how you plan to change and get started. A shortcut–William James said “If you want a quality, act as if you already had it.” Affirmations can also help.

4. Goethe said, “Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” Don’t underestimate the power of a goal combined with a burning desire and focus.

To stay motivated, refer to these positive thoughts regularly. Don’t let obstacles like procrastination, fear, or negativity derail you. Overcome procrastination by action, fear by accepting that some failures will occur, and negativity by maintaining a positive attitude and associating only with positive, supportive people.

A final thought. Knowledge is nothing without action. You’ll never know what you’re capable of unless you try.
