Usually choosing a career path is not a one-time decision; it’s a series of decisions, made as you progress through different stages of life, career and experience. Our lifestyles change, so do the people we meet and experiences we have. But the right start is important. When someone is selecting their career, there’s a lot riding on that decision. People want to select an occupation in which they can be successful for many years to come. Changing your career too often is not a good option either. That means you should pick something that is not only suitable for you, but also can support you financially. Recently, MBA has been riding the youngsters of the country. However, never follow the herd and make career decisions. Make sure you choose the right career path by avoiding these common mistakes.

1. Not taking enough time: Good decisions are made by taking ample amount of time. With good peace-of-mind and solitude to look at different options, a person is able to make the right career choice. Plan in advance of what you want to do. The very first step is to list down the things you are interested in doing. It is necessary to assess your own personal characteristics ie your skills and interests, your likes and dislikes, your strengths and weaknesses. When you match this, you will be able to get closer to your career goal.

2. Choosing the first or easiest job you can get: Very bad decision! To choose a job based on its ease is not being a good decision maker is a very bad career choice. You need to analyse whether you are matched for the skill set that the job requires and moreover, whether it interests you. Once your capabilities match, you should think whether is there anything more that you can do, and are you settling for less? For example, if a person is good at writing, he/she needs to decide what kind of writing he/she is more inclined and passionate about: creative writing or reporting/journalism.

3. Don’t follow the league: Don’t go by the herd mentality. There are several who have done that and later realised that probably they never wanted to do this, or they could do better. For example, a person who wished to study MBA, took up international marketing, whereas a better option would have been to enroll for an MBA college. There are several MBA colleges which offer guidance and have best facilities too. Currently, choosing an MBA college could be laborious with the sea of options available. There are list of MBA colleges in Gurgaon, Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore, which are best for MBA.

4. Choosing a job based on salary. This is a common error that many people make. A career which doesn’t match your skillset or interest can never yield good money to survive. A job chosen based on salary will not be satisfying.

5. Choosing a job because it provides a good title: Never be pressurised by titles and glory of a heavy sounding job title. If your interest lies in social service then might as well go ahead and do what you think you can do lifelong. Never be pressurised by peers or parents either. Talk to a counsellor if you can’t take a decision.

6. Choosing a job to fulfill your parents’ unfulfilled dream: Every parent wants to live their unfulfilled dreams through their children. It’s human tendency and quite common in India. However, never be pressurised to do what your parents want you to do. If you feel you are interested in making a career in some other field or sector then convey this to them and they will surely understand your interests. Additionally it is the responsibility of parents to ask their children about what they wish to do, before they tell them what they want them to do.
