7 tips for how to become a leader at work

Becoming a leader at work is a very challenging task and it requires sufficient experience and skills to lead a team. If you are working in any organization and you want to become a leader of your staff, here are 7 tips that might help you:

Tip#1: Appreciate your juniors

Appreciate your junior staff members. If you don’t appreciate them, they won’t be in your favor. Surveys have shown that if a senior member understands and appreciates his/her juniors, he/she is more likely to become the leader of that team as compared to the one who doesn’t appreciate the same junior staff at all. You would be chosen and selected as the finest leader if you keep appreciating and encouraging your subordinates. They will eventually consider you as their leader even before you become one. Remember that a leader is not a person who “tells” its juniors; instead a leader is the one who “shows” its juniors how to perform a specific task.

Tip#2: Highlight yourself

Put yourself forward and highlight your activities in front of your seniors. This way you will get noticed faster. Concentrate on your work and always try to finish your work before time.

Tip#3: Don’t underestimate yourself

Your juniors expect some great efforts and encouragement from you. If you yourself become unmotivated and if you at the same time underestimate your capabilities and talent, then how would your juniors be able to get by? So don’t underestimate or even overestimate yourself. Both are dangerous for your career. Have confidence over yourself and believe in teamwork!

Tip#4: Strengthen relationships with your seniors

Engaging and strengthening relationships with your seniors is the most effective part of your pursuit to become a leader in your organization. Maintain good relations with them and never give them even a single reason for complaint. In other words, this act is called maintaining your PR (Personal Reference or Personal Respect). This act of yours would double your chances to become a leader.

Tip#5: Work out-of-the-box

Don’t limit yourself to one task only. Instead, try to become a multi-talented person. Review your current projects and seek further opportunities to satisfy your seniors. A leader should know every aspect of the organization!

Tip#6: Control your emotions

There is no room for emotions in professional life. Even if you feel a bit mad upon your juniors, don’t just show that you are. Just calm yourself down and give your juniors another chance. This is a quality a team member looks forward to in a leader.

Tip#7: Be responsible

Know your responsibilities and priorities. Never get late for anything. Also, don’t give a free-hand to your juniors too. If at some point, you commit a mistake, accept it and work over it instead of sparking an argument with your seniors.

Bonus Tip

Most of the times, a leader doesn’t bother to note every single thing down on a paper. Remember that the things mentioned in-written are a proof while words are just invisible. So, if you have got some plans triggering your mind or if you have made any achievement, get it written down properly rather than communicating verbally with your seniors. This is a sense of responsibility and yet a plus point for one who wants to become a leader of a team.
