Learning the ins and outs of a specific major may be the main reason most students enroll in college, but, used wisely, your time spent at college can do more than train you for a single career path. Getting a job in the field of your choice may be ideal, but any additional skills you learn along the way will help you land a job right out of school until you can find work in your dream industry. While it won’t guarantee you’ll have a job waiting on the other side of graduation, having a background in a few computer programs can greatly enhance your résumé, making you more attractive to potential employers.

1 – Microsoft OS Software

You may love the one-piece system with its shiny screen and cute Apple logo, but, even if you’re a die-hard for your computer brand, don’t try to skirt through college on your Mac. At some schools, you can probably get your work done that way, but a solely Mac-based education will leave you ill prepared for the working world.

Graphic design and music companies are main exceptions, but, in general, businesses haven’t adopted Mac computers. PCs with Microsoft Office are the standard in almost all industries, so you’ll need an Office background. Study up, at the least, on the suite’s word-processing software Word and spreadsheet software Excel. They work a bit differently than on Macs, so take a few hours to get used to them on a friend’s PC.

2 – Adobe Dreamweaver

Businesses that want to continue competing in this increasingly virtual world know they need websites. Many have simply taken to social networks or free website hosts though, because they don’t have the skills to build a website on their own, or the income to pay for a designer. Web design software Adobe Dreamweaver makes website design as simple as possible, and if you can work it well enough to create basic sites, you’ll have extra appeal for a small business owner looking for an all-around assistant who can help increase their company’s online presence.

3 – Intuit QuickBooks

Though it’s accounting software through and through, Intuit QuickBooks isn’t a program solely for accountants. Many small businesses use QuickBooks to manage accounts payable and receivable, as well as payroll. Many small businesses also expect employees to be versatile and able to help out in multiple positions within the office. Basic knowledge of this popular accounting software may help you land a gig in an office in need of accounting backup.

4 – Microsoft SharePoint

You probably did most of your college work on a solo basis, but most offices don’t operate that way. Each department and every employee adds something to the overall productivity, and the ability to work together is an essential component of a smooth-running office. Some knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint will have you ready to integrate seamlessly into the workflow.

5 – The Major Software in Your Field

Most occupations have a few standard programs used widely in the field. Autodesk AutoCad, for instance, is a staple of many architectural offices in the U.S. Generally, you can count on the study in your major to provide you with a background in the most popular programs, but it’s good idea to research other popular programs on your own and make sure you have your bases covered. Not knowing the major software used by a company can cost you a job.

Universities across the country recognize that a well-rounded student needs more than topical knowledge. That’s why universities require core classes that give students a background on a variety of subjects. The more technological the world becomes, the more extensive of a software background students will need to compete in the workforce. When it comes to finding employment, having capabilities in a number of diverse programs can provide the edge a student needs.
