Interview With A Blogger

I work as a full-time blogger for a human services social networking company. I have been with this company for three years.

It is my job to post informative articles regarding abuse, neglect, misappropriation and struggles in today’s society. I blog about what abuse is in the largest and simplest form and when one should seek help as well as where to find help. A common misunderstanding in blogging is that all blogs are opinionated and do not hold many facts.

On a scale of 1-10, I would say I am happy with an 8. I would be more enthused if I could gather more help for my readers with better responses to their physical situations.

This job moves my heart because I am able to give help to others without having to ask for anything in return. I know I have found my sweet spot in this field, but hope to get closer to my calling as the years pass. My calling would entail more face to face interaction.

My blogs are unique because they offer free information to anyone interested in their rights. They explain when it is time to make a change and how. We also tell readers where they can get help and even set it up with law enforcement if needed. We do not show experiences, but comments from the readers are the most crucial in this job. Knowing what your audience wants and needs to hear is the way to bring in returning viewers.

I started in the line of work after 5 years of working with patients as an activity director. I was able to see many age groups and how they struggle with the knowledge of their rights. Seeing how much each individual needed their own advocate, I vowed to move on to a better way to help more people. The only thing I would have changed was the length of time took me to notice my sweet spot- blogging.

Taking on criticism and slander is a hard lesson to learn. My first year, I received a lot of hate mail and slander mail. It devastated me, but I had to learn that this was one way society communicated. If I could not listen and be understanding, then how could I expect viewers to listen to me?

Outside of school, the working world has taught me that all individuals are in a race and they are really competitive. My teachers never told me to be aggressive in the competition while searching for my career, just that I should try it.

My strangest, yet perfect experience, was when I started blogging with a female in distress over her boyfriend hitting her and her two kids and never giving her any money from her paycheck. As time went on and conversations became personal with this client, the topic of family came up in question to a safe area to go. Learning that this was my sister I had not seen or heard from in many years became stranger than fiction. Being able to help her immediately made it a perfectly strange experience.

I am able to work from home, yet I get up excited each day early to ensure my clients and readers have checked in and have done okay through the night. Having my family make time for me to assist others makes me proud and feels good to be in this field.

Some challenges I face are having the patience to set up a website and maintain it. Many new technologies are under way and training for them can get expensive. Although it can be tough to keep a website going, it is harder to get it out across the web in vast amounts. Linking, spam, widgets, and ads are my most challenging because I want to spend the majority of my time updating someone’s knowledge.

This job is as stressful as you let it be. Wearing my feelings on my sleeve will get me nowhere. Being able to balance my personal life and keep it healthy comes from my family being open minded.

My estimated salary is around $42,000 per year. I am happy with this amount as I get rewarded in the outcome. I feel it is an adequate amount for me.

I receive a one week vacation per year with my company. At times, I feel it is not enough and other times I realize I am just as common as anyone else.

My education skills that were required in this field were a Bachelors degree in sociology, psychology and language arts. I also had to have computer skills, critical thinking skills and good decision making.

In five years, I would like to see myself owning a website that aids more people with the urgent outcome needed.
