There’s no doubt that we have been experiencing a tough economy for several years.  With millions of workers having suffered job loss, competition has grown increasingly steep.  Of course, an increase in competition means that job seekers have to work extremely hard to secure employment, C-level workers included.  This is why it’s important for senior executives to learn to write recession-proof resumes by following these four guidelines:

1. Showcase Your Leadership

At the C-level, being a successful leader is critical to success in any position you assume.  And because you’re competing against dozens of other leaders when applying for jobs, it’s important that you find a way to stand out from the pack.  To effectively recession-proof your resume, you’ll need to prove that you’re one of the best leaders your position has ever seen—through testimonials, awards won, accomplishments, and more.  Otherwise, your competition could upstage you time and time again.

2. Prove You Are a Specialized Senior Executive

Being a senior executive is often a twofold role.  On one hand, you want to prove that you are a broad thinker who is capable of moving a company in new directions.  But you also need to prove that you’re zeroed in and highly knowledgeable in your specialty.  So take time to think about what contributions you’ve made to past companies—and your field as a whole—to beat out your competition as a specialized executive.

3. Predict the Company’s Future Under Your Guidance

If you want to prove that you stand out from the pack, then it’s important to show a company that you can guide them toward success.  This means focusing only on accomplishments that are geared toward delivering what the company wants from its senior executive.  Take time to read about the issues employers you’re applying with are facing, then choose professional experience that confirms you’ve solved similar problems in past positions.

4. Sell Your Brand

At the senior executive level, it’s important that you define your brand and showcase it throughout your resume.  You can get this done by listing your professional websites (Google Plus, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.) as well as providing any media you’ve been noted in that defines your title.  Also, consider starting your own blog related to your profession, and then listing it on your resume to show your relevance in the field.

You couldn’t have made it to the senior executive level without working hard at your craft.  So don’t let that hard work go to waste!  Showcase it thoroughly throughout your resume so that no competition will stop you from acquiring the job you want.
