Everyone wants to be appreciated and acknowledged. That’s a fact. But it’s one that many job seekers forget about in their rush to write a cover letter that will impress a hiring manager with their talent and skill.

You can take a different route and get to the destination (a job interview) faster than anyone else by focusing on two magic words: THANK YOU. And you can make an even better impression if you open and close your cover letters with an expression of sincere gratitude.

Here are some examples to consider, but of course you’ll want to use your own wording so your unique personality will shine through.

Sample #1:

Dear (employer’s name):

[opening] Thank you for taking time to read my cover letter. I appreciate the post I saw on CareerJimmy.com for a job as an administrative assistant now available at your company.

[closing] Once again, I’m grateful for this opportunity to present my credentials and my interest in being interviewed for this job. Thank you. I look forward to meeting you in person.

Sample #2:

Dear (employer’s name):

[opening] Today I read your post on CareerJimmy.com for a job as an executive accountant. Thank you very much for describing clearly the expectations you have for the person you hire, as well as the job requirements.

[closing] I appreciate your taking time to read my cover letter and review my enclosed resume. Thank you. I look forward to interviewing for this position and it would be a pleasure to meet and speak with you in person.

The body of your cover letter is important, of course, but keep in mind that catching an employer’s interest in the beginning and leaving him or her in a satisfied state at the end, will not happen unless you open and close with a heart-felt “Thank you.”
