Do you feel the desire to make a career change? Maybe your current position does not provide the same satisfaction as it once did. Perhaps, you’ve been forced into looking for something new due to changes within your industry. A recent survey indicates that many workers are in the latter position, as 60% of those who’ve lost jobs in the past year are now employed in a different career field. However, before jumping into a new field, consider the following advice:

Figure out what you want to do– This might be the most difficult part of your career transition. Think about your hobbies and interests, and how you could apply them to the workplace.

Introduce yourself with where you’re going, not where you’ve been– This includes creating a resume fit for the new job, instead of your present one. Emphasize skills which are relevant for the position of interest.

Find ways to showcase and improve the skills you’ll use in your ideal job– Try an internship to learn more about your new field, work on a part-time or contract basis, or volunteer somewhere. Any of these opportunities can provide valuable experience on your way to a new career.

Whatever your reason is for making a career change, the decision should be well thought out. Consider this time as an investment in your future. Find your passion, and then prepare yourself accordingly.
