What it is like to attend Fort Hays State University
Fort Hays State University is located in Hays, Kansas, on the western plains of the state. The campus sits on 4,160 acres of land that was once a wild frontier town and part of the historic Fort Hays Frontier Military Post. There are stately, limestone buildings, an abundance of flowers, as well as trees and shrubs. FHSU enrolls more than 10,000 students each year. Half of the enrolling class participates in distance education courses provided through the virtual college program; this includes more than 2,000 FHSU students at partner universities in China.
The admission requirements for students at Fort Hays State University include having ACT scores of 21, ranking in the top one-third of their graduating classes, or having the minimum GPAs of 2.0 for Kansas’ residents or 2.5 for non-residents. FHSU offers over 60 majors, along with a variety of minors and certificate programs. Some of the most popular programs where students want to find entry level jobs are art, education, biology, and health and human performance. Some of FHSU’s outstanding academic programs include graphic design, the Master’s Program in Biology, financial planning, leadership studies, and agriculture. There’s also a four year radiologic technology program, which is one of the only programs like it in the state of Kansas, according to Admissions Counselor, Cassy McDonald. FHSU employs 268 full-time faculty members, with 128 being tenured and 180 having their doctoral degrees.
Athletic teams at Fort Hays State University compete in NCAA division two sports. The men’s basketball team has won several national championships, and the women’s team has won a title too. In the fall of 2010, FHSU expects to add men’s and women’s soccer teams. Four residence halls and one apartment complex are available to students, offering condominium style living. The recently renovated Wooster Place houses married students and faculty members. There are about 120 student organizations in the categories of campus life, academic, honorary, residential, and religious groups.
