What it is like to attend Davidson College

January 28, 2011

About 20 minutes north of Charlotte, North Carolina, in the city of Davidson, and along Lake Norman, you will find Davidson College. The 450 acre campus blends small town and city living with metro Charlotte, and features red brick buildings and stately columns. Davidson enrolls around 1,700 students, with 60% coming from outside the southeastern United States.

At Davidson College, half of all admitted students have SAT scores between 1950-2240 and ACT scores between 30-34; however, these test scores are not requirements for admission. Davidson requires a unique peer recommendation, where students ask their friends to complete evaluation forms, according to the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, Chris Gruber. For students who qualify, the Davidson trust ensures that their financial needs are met through a combination of grants and student employment. This concept eliminates the loan component of tuition, and the school is the first liberal arts college in the U.S. to apply it. Davidson offers 21 different majors, 12 minors, 12 concentrations, and numerous other courses like Arabic and computer science; the most popular majors where students want to find entry level jobs are English, biology, political science, history, psychology, and economics. In addition, students can even design their own majors through DC’s center of interdisciplinary study. There are 162 full-time faculty members at Davidson, with 98% having their terminal degrees.
Athletes at Davidson College compete in 21 NCAA division one sports, and many of them as a member of the southern conference. Roughly 95% of students live on campus in one of the 11 residence halls or six apartment style buildings. They can also find plenty of activities such as women’s eating houses, club sports, concerts, and multicultural events.
In 1896, Davidson College was home to the first medical use of X-rays. It is also the home of one alumnus, who went on to become the CEO of Burger King.
