How to Make Your Work Day Work Better

January 28, 2011

Since most people spend at least one third of their time at work, it makes sense to take a look at how to make the work day work even better. The first step, and the most important, is to become aware of and observe yourself at work. Commit to getting off of autopilot. You do have a lot of choice over what you do at work and whether it fuels or depletes your energy tank. Try taking an hour a month to give some thought to what is working for you at work and what is not. Spend a lunch hour jotting down what you want to shift or improve. Don’t accept the status quo as permanent.
One key area to think about when you do this work review is how much passion you are experiencing at work. Do you ever feel engaged, energized, or excited about what you are doing? Notice what those activities are and try to do more of them. Look for ways to stretch your current job duties to include more of what you enjoy doing. By being aware of what gives you that positive spark, you can ask for and attract more of it to you.
Also, look at whether you give yourself any breaks during your work day. It is imperative that you take at least a five-minute break every two hours to just breath, move your body, and let your brain have a rest. While it is tempting to think you can’t even spare five minutes, or heaven forbid, a whole 30 minutes for lunch, you will be amazed how much more productive you will be if you take short breaks and an actual lunch break. Why not try this for a week and see what a difference it can make. By working more effectively, you may even find you can leave the office on time and have some energy left over for yourself at the end of the day.
