Four Ways to Get Your Career Off on the Right Track

January 28, 2011

Great article over at Young & Successful about what young professionals should do in order to maximize their chances of being successful when they start a new job:

  1. Look the part by dressing for success. If your manager wears a suit and you want to manage, wear a suit.
  2. Present your ideas articulately and with command but always remember to listen.
  3. Look the part by paying attention to your non-verbal cues such as posture, how you shake hands, keeping your office space neat, etc. If you look like you’re disorganized, your chances of being promoted will plummet.
  4. Become the go-to contact for an area of expertise which is in high demand in your organization. Make sure that it is an area in which you are competent, have interest, and value.
