Penny Loretto’s Internship Pick: SCA Archaeology
Archaeology interns working for the Student Conservation Association (SCA) will gain special skills and an opportunity to get archeological experience including jobs such as: excavating and recording techniques, archival research, and cataloging and curating of archaeological collections. Students will be trained on map and compass orienteering, using survey equipment, back country safety and camping, and driver awareness while interning in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, located on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina.
Other tasks included in the internship experience include conducting background archaeological documents and archives research along with the analysis and cataloging of artifacts, performing of walk-over surveys and shovel tests for park project compliance, training and database management, assisting with mapping and creating maps, conducting orientation with project managers, and assisting with reconnaissance for upcoming park projects.
