There may be times when college students and recent graduates encounter networking opportunities. The people they meet at professional events and other social gatherings may serve as potential contacts in their searches for internships and entry level jobs. So, how should job candidates approach these opportunities? Here are some tips to help them network effectively.

Prepare your business cards and elevator pitch – Business cards let people know who you are and what you have to offer; an elevator pitch allows you to communicate this information briefly.
Stand by the food and drink table – If you’re shy about approaching other people, this tip will help bring them to you. As a result, you can break the ice by introducing yourself and strike up a conversation about the event you’re attending.
Take notes about each person on their business card – Keep a pen on hand to take notes about everyone you meet on their business cards. This will help you to remember each person, and even remind you to follow up on something that was discussed at a particular event.
Following these tips will help entry level job seekers network effectively by giving them the know-how and the confidence to do so when these opportunities arise. After all, they never know when they might meet their next employers.
