Job Summary
Prepares histology slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologists. Prepares sections of tissue received from surgery for immediate examination. Operates laboratory equipment to prepare tissue specimens to be preserved for study by pathologists. Consistently combines ethical judgment with technical skill within policies and legal guidelines of the department and institution.

Essential Functions
  • Performs frozen section preparations within expected time. Tissue is embedded, cut, and stained so that diagnosis to clinician can be made promptly.
  • Completes required daily procedures and checks. Ensures documentation is concise and complete. Analyzes discrepancies and follows through appropriately.
  • Prepares specimens for cytologic examination within expected time frame. Prepares specimens such that optimal cell recovery for staining and examination is assured. Performs test order entry. Differentiates appropriate protocols for specific tissues.
  • Assists with autopsies as assigned.
  • Performs routine, special, and immune histochemical stains within expected time frame. Replaces reagents, uses controls on each stain, completes routine H&E within time expected, rework limited due to technical error.
  • Prepares tissue and assists in gross examination. Organizes specimens, performs test order entry, and maintains accurate accessioning processes.
  • Differentiates accurate and different protocols appropriate for specific tissues.
  • Prepares specimens to be sent to appropriate laboratory for testing.
  • Maintains a safe environment for self, coworkers, and patients. Follows established general safety procedures and utilizes PPE appropriately. Practices good hand hygiene 100% of the time.
Physical Requirements
Moderate lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying. Lifting of weights of up to 25 pounds and infrequently in excess of 25 pounds with assistance. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, and reaching. Use of computer for long periods of time. General hospital environment with some exposure to chemicals, pathogens, and patient blood and body fluids. Some latex exposure may be expected.

Education, Experience and Certifications
Completion of a Histotechnician training program is required. Certification as Histotechnician (HT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent. 1 year of experience in histotechnology is preferred.
