Structural EIT

Hatch is currently seeking a recent graduate for a Structural Engineer-In-Training position in our Trail, BC Office. Trail is located 10 minutes from Rossland and the famous Red Mountain Resort. The Rossland region is a mecca for mountain biking in the summer and skiing / snowboarding in the winter. Working closely with our senior engineers and designers, your primary role will be to act as a technical resource on challenging projects. The position will allow the candidate to directly apply and develop his or her knowledge in structural design of heavy industrial structures for mining and mineral processing facilities and hydro power plants.


The candidate will be exposed to modern design tools, including 3D modeling, finite element analysis and complex calculation software. In addition to theoretical design and analytical work, the candidate may gain valuable on-site practical experience. As time progresses, project duties and responsibilities will increase, facilitating registration of the candidate as a professional engineer.


There will be opportunities for travel and work assignments in Canadian and international site locations. Newly hired EITs will be assigned to work closely with experienced engineers who will provide guidance and mentoring. There will be opportunity to specialize in a particular technical area, move into project engineering/management, and/or transfer to one of the many Hatch offices or project sites.


Typical responsibilities will include:


  • Providing efficient, effective, economical and timely solutions to structural design problems in a multidiscipline project environment.
  • Performing computer-aided modeling and analysis of steel and concrete structures.
  • Developing technical specifications
  • Preparing quantity take-offs and assisting the Lead Engineer with developing project scopes, engineering and capital cost estimates
  • Conducting site visits and performing inspections of existing structures
  • Maintaining technical knowledge to ensure appropriate technologies are incorporated into designs and the most cost-effective design techniques are utilized.





  • A recent graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on structural design and analysis course work. Candidates with a master’s degree specializing in Structural Engineering would be highly regarded.
  • Solid academic achievement, strong interpersonal skills and time management skills with a commitment to achieving engineering excellence.
  • Aptitude for working on multi-disciplinary teams and the ability to interact successfully with all levels of staff, clients and vendors.
  • Experience with structural analysis software such as STAAD or SAP2000 and knowledge of drawing software such as Microstation or AutoCAD will be considered a definite asset.
