IT Specialist II - Web Development

Responsible for leading design, development and implementation of web-based systems to support business and scientific functions throughout the Charles River group. 



  • In conjunction with users, analysts and IT managers, where applicable, lead design and development of web-based systems, such as intranet, internet, and customer portal/extranet.
  • Lead the definition, design, development, support, documentation, and testing of the solution through the system program development lifecycle (PLC) in accordance with the defined project timelines, and following secure coding practices (such as OWASP).
  • Implement core IT practices, including:  project management per the PLC, portfolio management, information architecture, process architecture, common engineering (common objects, re-usable code), testing & quality assurance and validation.
  • Ensure solutions are transitioned smoothly through the production cut-over process.
  • Lead training and / or ensure effective knowledge transfer to those responsible for training use of the new solutions such that adoption and value realization is optimized.
  • Provide timely and effective level 3 support for application related questions.  Plan, fix and implement patch releases as required and governed.  Manage user expectations through timely communications.
  • Recommend extensible solutions design that can be leveraged across applications in conjunction with the Architecture team.
  • Present solutions design and implementation to other developers as part of knowledge sharing initiatives.
  • Assist with management of Charles River internet domain properties through our registrar, obtaining new domains, and transferring existing domains as needed.
  • Participate in the development and communication of departmental systems, SOPs, policies and procedures.

  • Education:  Bachelor’s degree (B.A. /B.S.) or equivalent in computer science or related discipline. 
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years related experience in IT including experience in
      • Microsoft .NET web applications, SQL Server, experience with Microsoft Azure web hosting desired but not required
      • PHP web applications and Drupal content management system, LAMP stack, experience with Acquia hosting and Acquia Lift personalization desired but not required
      • HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and web front-end technologies
      • Google Analytics
    • Minimum of 2 years related experience with domain registrars, domain transfers.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Other:  Must be fully competent in IT functional area, have effective communication skills and good interpersonal skills.


  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear and work/type at a computer. 



  • General office working conditions; the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.



  • This position may require some domestic and international travel.
