Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

 Project engineer will support the glassmaking process for optical fiber manufacturing on a division level. The primary mission is to apply technical knowledge and project management skills to advance manufacturing capabilities. Project assignments will require broad application of engineering skills, and include project management, process improvement, cost reduction, process and raw material optimization, engineered safety improvements, and ensuring manufacturing readiness for new processes. Position is in the Division Engineering organization within Corning Optical Fiber and Cable (OFC). Location is in the Charlotte (Midland), NC area and will depend on specific job assignment.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Apply fundamental engineering concepts to drive capability advancements in glass manufacturing process.
  • Lead all phases of projects to include initiation, planning, implementation and control, and close-out elements.
  • Organize a project(s) by defining scope and objectives, securing needed resources, building the project plan and establishing the project governance structure.
  • Manage schedule, budget, scope and resource conflicts.
  • Work between technology and plant manufacturing organizations to ensure smooth deployment of new technologies, products, and processes by identifying and and/or leading implementation of required capabilities.
  • Collaborate with global manufacturing sites to coordinate and solve glassmaking-related technical issues.


Hours of work:

Typically 40+ hours per week; M-F but may require weekends depending on travel schedules or job assignment.


Travel Requirements:

15-20% (+/-) in North America.

International travel may also be required depending on job assignment.



Required Education and Experience:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Physics with Mechanical Focus
  • GPA>3.0 from ABET Accredited program. R
  • 5+ Years Engineering Experience


Required Skills:

  • High degree of initiative to drive projects to timely completion
  • Mastery of fundamental engineering concepts with demonstrated ability to apply to manufacturing problems.
  • Demonstrated delivery of results through sound project management practices and organizational leadership.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment that, on occasion, requires support outside typical work schedule to complete assignments.
  • Able to work in a team based environment and lead or participate on a highly matrixed team.
  • Equipment design background utilizing Autodesk Inventor or other 3D modeling tools; familiar with general drafting standards.
  • Hands-on mechanical systems troubleshooting experience
  • Familiar with industrial safety standard practices and manufacturing equipment fundamentals
  • Utilizes sound and rational problem solving and decision making processes.
  • Proficient in quality tools including KT, Performance Excellence, and Project Management tools. • Experience managing or directing work of cross functional groups
  • Proficient in basic office software applications including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project.


Desired Skills:

  • Able to collaborate with varied levels and functions within the organization, including manufacturing, technology, R&D, operations, procurement, IT, and supply chain.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or higher
  • LEAN manufacturing training
  • Modeling or simulation experience (FEA)
