Position Highlights
Research Development Services (RDS) at the University of Arizona is seeking to fill the role of Associate, Research Development (Research Development Professional IV) National Security & Defense.
Associates provide proposal development support for UArizona faculty pursuing extramural funding through strategic proposal consultation with faculty, proposal management, & review for grantsmanship & alignment with the funding solicitation.
The National Security & Defense Associate will generally work on proposals to major sponsors affiliated with related research opportunities, including but not limited to DARPA, IARPA, CDMRP, and all branches of the services and their affiliated research labs (AFOSR, AFRL, ONR, ARL).
The successful candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of, and familiarity with, various federal sponsoring agencies, prior experience in research development related roles, including identifying funding sources, and proposal development and/or proposal editing/writing. Further the candidate will have the ability to review & interpret funding opportunity goals & guidelines to ensure alignment with the sponsor. Associates are expected to support team development through organizing thematic workshops & meetings supporting the Associate’s portfolio.
This requires an attitude for excellence, a forward-thinking approach to anticipating funding opportunities, excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication skills, and a collaborative approach to working with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds and scientific disciplines. This position joins a growing team of professionals within UArizona's Research Development Services and the National Security Program team.

Duties & Responsibilities
Duties & responsibilities:
- Partner with faculty in proposal development efforts including identifying funding sources and solicitations, managing proposals, ensuring alignment of proposals with the solicitation and funder’s research priorities, editing proposals to improve grantsmanship and ensure sufficient emphasis on scientific rigor and the integration of scientific/technical proposal content, and facilitating research team interactions and progress for large, complex and strategic proposal efforts. In addition to research proposals, expertise may be required for responses to Requests for Information, Dear Colleague Letters, Letters of Intent, pre-proposals, and white papers, etc., and for consultation on design, graphics, and other illustrative materials during proposal preparation.
- Develop tools and guidance to facilitate proposal development and conduct workshops and training to assist UA faculty in interpreting funding agency and institutional requirements and in crafting competitive proposals
- Coordinate with appropriate central and college-level units across campus in the preparation and submission of proposals to funding solicitations
- Partner and collaborate with the Research Development and National Security Program leadership in the synthesis of strategic goals for pursuing future funding, including identifying areas of existing and emerging strengths in the designated portfolio at UArizona, gathering competitive intelligence on sponsors and funding opportunities, and facilitating the formation of proposal teams.
- Maintain and expand knowledge of and familiarity with federal and non-federal funding opportunities as well as personnel at funding agencies and partners
- Additional duties may be assigned.
Knowledge, skills & abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of research practices; preference for demonstrated knowledge of academic funding
- Ability to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals
- Ability to handle business confidential and sensitive information
- Skill in public speaking and presenting information
- Skill in preparing research documents and proposals
- Master's degree and 8 years of relevant work experiencerequired, OR
- PhD and 6 years of relevant work experience isrequired.
- Experience in research development relatedroles, including identifying funding sources & solicitations & proposaldevelopment/proposal editing/writing is required.
- Experience with defense and national security sponsors
- Experience supporting both individual investigator proposals but also team science proposals
