Here at the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA), we are passionate about our mission of "Serving Those Who Served."  As a national leader in our advocacy for more than 500,000 veterans and their family members, we strive to connect them to earned benefits as well as innovative programs focused on their overall health and wellness.  In addition, we provide critical community services through a variety of programs, and at our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla.  These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to honorably discharged veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star.

We are in need of a part-time Food Service Worker Lead for our WA Soldiers Home.  As a Supervisor, you'll ensure safe food handling practices and compliance for all meals that are being served to our residents.

The anticipated shift for this position will be from:

5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (Friday and Saturday)

11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Sunday and Monday)

Days Off: Tuesday, Wednesday and ThursdaySome of what you will be doing: 

* Serving as a supervisor, including guiding and checking the work of other Food Service Workers and monitoring for safe food handling practices.
* Serving hot and cold foods on the cafeteria line or serving line using therapeutic diet principles and monitoring for safe serving temperatures.
* Performing a variety of food preparation duties following specific sanitation principles and utilizing safe working methods.
* Cleaning and sanitizing food preparation equipment, utensils and dishware; general sanitization of all areas in the food department.
* Completing performance development plans and monitoring/documenting performance and attendance of staff.
* Delivering food carts to resident dining rooms.

Required Qualifications: 

* High School Diploma or equivalent.
* Current and valid Washington State Food Handler's Permit.
* One (1) year of supervisory experience in a food service setting.
* Ability to demonstrate detailed knowledge of food sanitation and safety practices.
* Ability to lift/push/pull frequently up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 60 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Degree or certificate in Culinary Arts.
* Serve Safe Certification.
* One (1) year of experience working with a geriatric population and/or healthcare institutional setting.
* One (1) year of experience working with residents with dementia/Alzheimer's diagnoses'.
* Knowledge of therapeutic diet planning; preparation and serving of special diets.

* State employees must be fully vaccinated.  Your vaccine status will be verified at New Employee Orientation.

* Must comply with health screening requirements by undergoing a tuberculosis skin test.
* Must remain current in CPR after hire.
* Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training and use of respiratory protection as required by the WA Industrial Safety & Act standards.  
* Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.
* This position is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
