As a member of the Body Closures Engineering team, the Supervisor will be responsible to supervise Design Release Engineers to meet program deliverables for Closures Group to include: doors, hood, tailgate, liftgate and related hardware and mechanisms. Expect to use your experience and engineering tools to ensure both initial assembly and component specifications, support system performance targets and government regulatory requirements.

Role and Responsibilities

* Working level, technical leader for Closures
* Lead at a detail level the daily activities of a team of DREs to design, develop and release closures from design concept through production
* Interface with studio, test, plant, quality, vehicle planning and suppliers to design, develop and release sheet metal parts, mechanisms and hardware including seals, latches, handles, hinges, gas struts, regulators, rods and cables.
* Develop criteria sections for future vehicles; provide feasibility/proposals for development of designs from studio concepts/sketches
* Conduct vehicle benchmark / technical research of competitive products, present findings and suggest recommendations
* Follow-up with DREs to release completed geometry on time using Catia V5 Teamcenter CAD tools
* Coordinate with homologation team to ensure validation of all applicable requirements
* Understand and update engineering documentation such as technical specifications, DFMEAs and DVPs
* Coach team to understand vehicle and component level CAE analysis and propose next steps
* Oversee department EBOM, including material selection and finish
* Work with purchasing for supplier sourcing and supplier management - including design, validation and tooling
* Travel to suppliers and assembly plant for prototype builds and SOP support.
* Track open issues, identify roadblocks, initiate communication and formulate plans for timely closure of issues.
* Escalate major issues or roadblocks to Sr. Manager.


* Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Materials Engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited or equivalent program.
* 7 years of engineering experience with OEM design and release of sheet metal, mechanisms and hardware for closures
* Demonstrated knowledge of first principals, strength of materials, fatigue, noise & vibration, corrosion, thermal expansion
* Experience with aluminum metal forming, hemming, compensation, sealing, clinch-nuts, cable routing, water management
* Dimensional management, understanding of GD&T and check fixturing
* Class A surface development, typical section development and knowledge of FMVSS/regulatory requirements
* Experience of root cause analysis or Design of Experiments
* High level of oral and written communication skills
* Must be proficient with Microsoft products such as Word, Excel and others
* Proficient in CAD (Catia V5) and Teamcenter, ability to make 3D parts and assemblies and 2D drawings.

Preferred Skills

* Previous OEM or Start-up automotive experience.
* Experience benchmarking engineering technologies and applying those into the design activities as appropriate
* Knowledgeable of quality tools and methods like APQP, PPAP, SPC, 8D and Gauge R&R
* Previous role supervising DREs
* Good analytical skills for calculating simple structures, or perform using CAE
* Proficient with Jira system
* Experience with window design, glass forming, exterior or interior door trim, castings, paint, electronic control units
