The Newborn Screening Network RN Coordinator will work closely with DPH Newborn Screening Network Core Team, the specialty care centers and the state Laboratory to coordinate diagnosis and treatment of newborn screening referrals from the state lab. Duties will include direct communication with primary care physicians, birthing hospital clinicians, and families and may include involvement in ambulatory care visits. The Newborn Screening Network RN Coordinator serves as a key member of the NBS network core team, which is comprised of the NBS program Medical Director, co-program Director (Geneticist), RN Program Coordinator, RN Program Analyst, Genetic Counselor, Registered Dietician, and Project Manager. The incumbent will provide the framework and coordination for all Newborn screening referrals and will have easy access to guidance by the nurses in each of the specialty care teams. In addition, they are responsible for improving the quality and efficiency of the Newborn screening program. They must have the ability to recognize problems and work with different teams throughout the hospital to solve those problems in order to improve the patient / family experience. The incumbent will be expected to proactively work with other core network members to identify challenges and areas on which to focus quality/performance improvement efforts.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

* Receiving, recording, and tracking electronic and phone communications from the DPH lab
* Triaging and recording newborn screening results
* Communicating with birthing centers
* Communicating results to the primary care or birthing hospital providers and families via telephone
* Obtaining information about the newborn's clinical status
* Connecting urgent cases to care based on newborn's clinical status, degree of PCP and/or parental concern, and / or other established clinical parameters
* Making recommendations, in close collaboration with specialists, for initial follow-up based on ACMG 'ACT' algorithms and clinical parameters.
* Tracking lab results
* Provide support to the healthcare team and family via the Newborn Screening Info Line
* Developing and maintaining triage and management algorithms

Customer Service:

* Establishes effective relationships with patients, families, staff and external customers/ consultants to the team.

* Is accountable for departmental and hospital quality and safety initiatives and goals.
* Must possess a degree from an accredited nursing program for registered nurses. BSN preferred. If ADN, must acquire BSN within 3 years of hire.


Able to demonstrate all of the CCMC Core Organizational Competencies or has potential to do so as well as any clinical competencies within specialty area.

* BLS CPR for Healthcare provider, required upon hire and maintained current at all times
* Current State of Connecticut Registered Nurse licensure required and maintained thereafter
