Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION: Position is responsible for providing religious and spiritual services to patients, their families, and the hospital staff through spiritual/pastoral care, counseling, and educational services.


* Master of Divinity degree or equivalent academic credit as determined by the Association for Professional Chaplains (APC).
* Theological competency, expertise in the art and science of spiritual/pastoral care and developed skills for working with behavioral sciences.
* One year of prior pastoral experience preferred.
* Ability to minister in an ecumenical setting. Completion of one-year residency in an accredited ACPE program (minimum 4 units).
* Endorsement by faith group for hospital ministry.
* Board certified, or in the process of obtaining certification (within 3 years) with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC).
* Demonstrates commitment to the Partners-in-Caring process by integrating both Behaviors and Operating Principles in all internal and external customer interactions. Performs duties with accountability, competency, innovation, collaboration, compassion and respect to create the best possible outcomes with exceptional customer experiences.


* Provides spiritual, religious, and emotional care to patients, families, and staff by offering and overseeing patient and family visitation, providing/coordinating worship leadership, and continuing education leadership for Ministry Team Volunteers and hospital staff.
* Participates and provides leadership for healthcare ethics functions by providing education, guidance, and support to physicians, patients, families and hospital staff involved in the decision-making process within the realm of the ethical dilemmas inherent in healthcare.
* Designs, conducts, and participates in education activities for area clergy and the public in the fields of pastoral/spiritual care and health care ethics; mentors and coaches ACPE interns and residents.
* Interacts with various departments and medical staff both providing and receiving information to ensure the appropriate integrated care of patients and families.
* Participates in ongoing quality improvement processes, thus ensuring that JCAHO standards pertaining to spiritual care are adequately addressed by Chaplaincy Services.
* Develops and maintains relationships with community congregations in order to facilitate their ministry to hospitalized patients while following federal regulations for patient privacy.
* Participates in division and hospital planning and implementation of spiritual/pastoral services objectives; serves on hospital management team and participates on hospital, system, and division committees as assigned.
* Adheres to all MH policies, procedures, and standards, within budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, productivity, and accuracy of practice.
* Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency, supports division-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to residents, interns and less experienced staff.
