The Mission of the Idaho Department of Correction is to create a model correctional system that provides equitable access to programming and opportunities that reflect a community experience, foster connections, and restore victims of crime.  

This exam includes the standards required for the Department's compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003. 

The Idaho Department of Correction is hiring for a temporary position for Instruction Assistant at the Idaho State Correctional Institution and South Idaho Correctional Institution in Boise, Idaho.

If you have previously applied for the position of Instruction Assistant you must reapply under this announcement. Previous scores will not be used.  Hiring lists may be created from open competitive, IDOC Department Promotional, or Statewide promotional applicants. The applications may also be used for future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months.

* Monitor class activities under the supervision of the instructor, executes lesson plans, monitor and appraise student learning results
* Check and correct student assignments
* Monitor student behavior and progress, reports problems, and suggests modifications to student instruction plan
* Consult with teacher and staff members on academic and behavioral planning, management, and evaluation
* Deliver TABE testing services and maintain testing supplies
* Maintain student electronic records and files
* Participate in staff training and professional development
* Maintain confidentiality of all information regarding residents
* Conduct TABE Locator Testing
* Conduct TABE assessment to established baseline for learning and reoccurring progress thereafter
* Some knowledge of behavioral management as related to an educational environment
* Experience preparing lesson plans and presenting educational materials to students
* Experience working in a group education setting
* Skill in typing labels, lists, forms, and reports


* Willing to work in a correctional facility
* Completion of at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education (32 academic core credits) OR Obtained an academic associate's or higher degree (in any academic area) OR Achieved a passing score (460 or higher) on the ETS Paraprofessional Test Assessment OR Willingness to meet one of the above within three years from the date of hire.


* Experience using MS Office programs


To be hired, candidates will have a history and background supportive of department mission goals and will be subject to:

* Completing a Background Investigation Questionnaire and pre-employment drug testing 
* Having a federal and state criminal background check to include fingerprints 
* Having a history of law-abiding behavior 
* Felonies, misdemeanors, illegal drug usage, DUI's, adverse driving convictions and employment history may make you ineligible for employment

Non-hiring restrictions are in place for candidates who: 

* Have been convicted of Domestic Violence or similar types of violent behaviors 
* Have a dishonorable discharge from military service 
* Currently are using, dealing or are associated with illegal drugs 
* Have close friends or relatives under IDOC care & custody where the vacancy exists 
* Are currently under IDOC supervision or probation (must be released from IDOC supervision or probation for at least one year)
