**Job Summary:**

The Tool Maker is responsible for laying out materials, determining dimensions, sequencing operations, fabrication, assembling and performing all other operations necessary to construct a variety of permanent type tools and dies for use in making production parts.

**Essential Functions:**

+ Make tools and dies typically of configuration and complexity involving such as the following: acute, right, and obtuse angles, single radial contours, close tolerance radii, close tolerance holes and locations in non-parallel planes, micro-finish surfaces

+ Make such items as mill fixtures, holding fixtures, NC machining fixtures, drill jigs and plates, punch press dies, plastic molds, assembly fixtures, inspection fixtures, soldering fixtures, plug, profile, "go, no-go" gauges, etc.

+ Determine materials to use, plan sequence of operations, calculate and layout angles, contours and inter-related dimensions using handbooks and standard shop math, as required

+ Use precision measuring instruments including micrometers, height and depth gauges, dial indicators, calipers, surface plates, sine plates, rockwell test, and profilometers

+ Setup, adjust, and operate lathes, mills, grinders, or machines of similar complexity to cut, form, shape, and otherwise fabricate tool parts and completed tools

+ Perform bench work, heat treating, grinding, polishing, welding and brazing as necessary to complete primary duties

+ Introduce production parts and mate parts as necessary into mainstream production

+ As directed, devise tools, fixtures, molds, gauges, using knowledge of the requirement only or working from sample part and engineer's ideas; make sketches as required

+ Repair or modify existing fixtures, cutting tools

+ Maintain a clean 5S work environment.

+ Follow and adhere to all standard safety protocols

+ Any other task assigned by supervisor or management

**Non-Essential Functions:**

+ Other related assignments such as build engineered prototype mechanical parts

+ Set up equipment, interpret specification, train and check accuracy of work of designated employees of lower classification

**Minimum Qualifications:**

+ **_Experience:_** 7+ years of experience at journey level machinist sufficient to demonstrate thorough competency

+ **_Knowledge:_** Thorough knowledge of forming, finishing, and heat treating characteristics of materials worked with; Thorough knowledge of shop math utilized in layout of materials, including geometry and trig; Thorough knowledge of modern tool making and machining methods and techniques; Familiar with manual machining operations which include lathes, mills, surface grinders, drills and band saws

+ **_Skills/Abilities:_** Ability to visualize and interpret three-dimensional forms from prints, drawings and sketches; Ability to conceptualize tool or parts requirements from oral instructions; Ability to understand oral and written instructions and to maintain routine records; Ability to prioritize jobs through Material Resource Planning (MRP) and Management directives; Ability to trouble shoot equipment in Shop Order Shop (SOS) department; Ability to read blue prints and work independently

+ **_Education/Certification:_** High School diploma or equivalent; Satisfactory completion of formal apprenticeship or vocational program in setup and operation of all traditional machine shop machines, or equivalent skill and knowledge (to include complete course work, or equivalent knowledge, in applicable geometry and trig, engineering drawing, machining theory, heat treat, tensile and compressive strength characteristics of metals)

+ **Eligibility Requirement:** This position requires access to controlled data or information and therefore only US persons will be considered. As a US Department of Defense contractor, we are bound by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

**Preferred Qualifications:**

+ Knowledge of Solid Works, Autodesk Inventor or 3D CAD related software

**Working Conditions:**

+ Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment

+ Manufacturing operations may require the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to: eye safety glasses, gowning, masks, hearing protectors, heel/wrist straps and any other required PPE

+ May be exposed to unusual environmental conditions such as loud noises, cold temperatures, confined spaces, dust or fumes

+ Physical strength and agility to manipulate heavy materials and equipment and to perform extended manual operations, under uncomfortable and greasy conditions at times

+ Requires work with very tight tolerances

+ Flexible and willing to work overtime if necessary
