Toast seeks a self-motivated, driven and experienced Privacy Counsel with European and/or United Kingdom domain-specific expertise to support and manage our expanding European operations. The Privacy Counsel will act as a subject matter expert for European data protection matters as well as generally support Toast’s growing Privacy team with the development, implementation and management of a comprehensive global privacy program. The ideal candidate will be a team player that is comfortable supporting a fast-growing business and partnering with various functions and business units across the organization. About this roll * (Responsibilities)
Support our growing European operations with the ongoing development, implementation and management of a comprehensive privacy program (including policy and template development, individual rights compliance, training, third party management, incident response etc)
Provide specialist advice to our business on GDPR compliance as part of our day-to-day business operations or as part of larger projects (including commercial, marketing, product development, corporate development, HR, security and other subject matters)
Support and manage any ongoing compliance requirements associated with our European operations, including management of individual rights requests, data protection impact assessments, intra-group agreements and records of processing activities
Provide privacy and security-focused drafting and contract negotiation support to the commercial legal team for new vendor, partner and customer agreements (and third-party management generally)
Provide general support as part of Toast’s global privacy program, including management of various global privacy projects, drafting and operationalization of new policies and governance, product rollouts and other privacy program initiatives
Monitor and assess the impact of new privacy and security regulatory developments and the resulting impact to Toast’s business units (in the European Union and elsewhere)
Do you have the right ingredients* ? (Requirements)
Qualified to practice law in a European jurisdiction
2-4 years of related privacy experience
Significant experience advising on and supporting compliance with the GDPR and other related European legislation
CIPP or similar certification preferred
Experience negotiating privacy and security provisions in technology agreements
Experience managing large cross-functional privacy projects preferred
Policy drafting experience (both internal and external-facing) preferred
Ability to break down complex and often ambiguous requirements into actionable advice
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written)
Experience working in a fast-paced environment
Ability to work in a team-oriented, diverse, inclusive and open-minded office environment and contribute to the thriving culture
Sense of humor and easygoing attitude preferred
