Brief Description


The successful applicant will be an established academic in a discipline within the Humanities and will have a proven ability in the following key performance areas:

·Academic and intellectual leadership

·Strategic planning and administration

·Human resource management and

·Financial sustainability of the faculty

The Dean will be a member of the University’s Senior Executive Team and will have a good understanding of:

·The Faculty and how it relates to the University

·South African higher education and its current imperatives

·Education, training and development systems and strategies in a tertiary context, including quality assurance systems

·Market developments relating to graduate demand

·Research promotion and demands, and manage postgraduate affairs of the faculty

·Professional developments and bodies relevant to the faculty

·The University strategy

The appointment is for a fixed period of five years.After that term, the Dean may apply for a second and final term of office in accordance with the University policies and procedures.If unsuccessful in the process to determine suitability for the final term, the candidate may be offered an academic position elsewhere in the Faculty, in an appropriate department based on the academic ranking outcomes.

In addressing the challenges of the university, the Dean should demonstrate a strategic ability to advance the Faculty of Humanities’ agenda within the University.The candidate must possess a PhD qualification and meet the University criteria for professorial appointment.

Remuneration: An attractive remuneration package is offered commensurate with the seniority of the position.
