**Position Summary**

The University of Colorado School of Medicine seeks a Chair for the Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery to provide strategic and operational leadership. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serving on the School's Executive Committee, the chair will be responsible for clinical and research activities of the department in addition to its academic programs in medical student, graduate student, resident, and postdoctoral teaching and training.

The Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery has an outstanding faculty, stable leadership structure, solid financial footing, and a significant grant portfolio. The department has about 80 paid faculty, including 45 MDs, 10 PhDs, 3 Audiologists, and 32 PAs/NPs/SLPs, with total annual clinical revenue of $17.5 million. The department ranks 18th in the country among departments of otolaryngology in total NIH funding, according to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. total award funding for the department is $4.7 million. The current research portfolio includes a T-32 training grant in its second 5 year funding cycle, and six active RO1s. There are 22 trainees in our resident group with an annual complement of 4 in addition to 2 within the T-32 training grant structure. The pediatric fellowship consists of 2 fellows annually. A newly created clinical fellowship program in Speech - Language Pathology is one of only 11 in the country that focuses on dysphagia, voice, and the full spectrum of head and neck conditions.

The chair will be responsible for overseeing and maintaining excellence in the Department's clinical, education, and research programs in collaboration with leadership of the School of Medicine and its faculty practice University of Colorado Medicine (CU Medicine). The position requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to bring together diverse groups to advance the common goals of the department and the institution. The successful candidate will be a strong leader, supportive of diversity, and have a proven track record of administration, education, and research, as well as a keen understanding of the complexities of an academic Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, and the ability to lead the further growth and development of the Department in all missions.

The Department chair is expected to work collegially with other chairs and center directors at the School of Medicine and with colleagues at its affiliates: UCHealth, Children's Hospital Colorado, Denver Health, VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System, National Jewish Health, and St. Joseph's Hospital.

**Major Responsibilities**

The chair will lead the clinical, educational, and research programs of the Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, with an emphasis on expanding the excellence, diversity, and collaboration within the School of Medicine and with our partners. The chair will:

+ Define the mission and establish the strategic direction for the department, in collaboration with the leadership of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and its affiliates.

+ Ensure the necessary financial and human resources are available to support the clinical, educational, and research missions of the department.

+ Assure excellent education and advanced training is delivered to the medical students, graduate students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows.

+ Expand and strengthen the department's education portfolio with the consideration of developing additional key fellowship programs including in Head and Neck surgical oncology.

+ Define and lead strategy that expands and strengthens the department's research portfolio, provides for deliberate investment into research activities and priorities, and supports principal investigators and other faculty in efforts to secure extramural funding.

+ Prioritize and align multidisciplinary research collaboration outside of the department to fulfill the institution mission (i.e. Head and Neck cancer SPORE, Center for Lungs and Breathing).

+ Supervise, prepare, implement, and monitor the department budget, which encompasses all funding sources, managing financial assets, and ensuring compliance with grant, legislative, and institutional guidelines. Work effectively to manage available resources responsibly.

+ Recruit, hire, develop, and retain outstanding and diverse faculty, including MDs, PAs, NPs, SLPs. Ensure an atmosphere of support, inclusion, and equity.

+ Be a role model and ensure compliance with highest standards of professional conduct throughout the Department.

+ Work collaboratively with diverse leaders of the School of Medicine, the Anschutz Medical Campus, and affiliate partners, including fellow chairs, administrators, faculty, and staff.

+ Align the department with the strategic plan of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, University of Colorado Medicine (CU Medicine), and the Anschutz Medical Campus.

+ Serve on the School of Medicine Executive Committee and on the board of CU Medicine, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation that provides practice and business management services for nearly 3,000 faculty physicians and advanced practice providers of the School of Medicine.

**Salary and Benefits:**

The salary range for this position has been established at $600,000 to $900,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

M.D. or D.O. with board certification in Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery with a record of professional accomplishments on a national and international scale, with a strong focus on clinical and research success, meeting the requirements for a faculty appointment at the Professor level.
