A specialist in the batteries field with a background in chemistry, materials science, physics, chemical engineering, or electronics engineering, as a battery chemist you are urgently required for the device engineering team focusing on devices battery development, electrical design and safety. As a chemist or materials scientist or electrochemical engineer you will assist in material characterisation, technical requirements and providing solutions problem solving and failure analysis for actual implementation. This team has wide ranging responsibility covering all aspects of battery design, manufacturer selection, validation testing, and device integration and in market monitoring. The team is also responsible for technical problem solving and failure analyses. As a chemist or materials scientist in batteries you will work as part of the test lab to support battery development and device validation activities within R&D.A core responsibility for this role will be rigorous testing of emerging battery technologies and chemistries.


Supporting the battery and device engineering team in battery design assessment, device and battery verification testing, sample preparation and functional problems solving.

Specification of battery requirements from detailed project briefs

Accountable for all aspects of battery design and design verification (theoretical and experimental)

Battery manufacturer identification and selection.

Battery validation and the functional safety testing of batteries and devices.

Experimental and test design for new battery formats, chemistries, or device operating principles

Specifying full battery validation and product integration test plans, test cases and analysing results to ensure the functionality and reliability of the product and its batteries.

Failure analysis and root cause investigations of battery failures or poor performance.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience Required

Degree in; chemistry, materials science, physics, chemical engineering or similar.

Charge/Discharge testing and environmental testing of electrochemical cells and battery packs.

Detailed cell and battery pack characterisation

Experience in materials characterisations techniques e.g. battery test equipment, X-ray diffraction, SEM and CT.

Significant knowledge and understanding of battery manufacturing processes.

Extensive experience in electrochemical test methods and their development.

Experienced with Li-ion battery safety testing.

Experienced with device and battery reliability testing.

Experience of battery integration into electronic products e.g. phones
