The Department of Public Work (DPW) is pleased to offer entry level summer opportunities for employment in our Public Works Department. The DPW supports a wide variety of activities and programs over the summer months, and it relies on motivated and hard-working summer help to ensure that our roads, parks, water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure, fleet, waste management, engineering, and buildings are all ready for the upcoming year. These jobs offer the opportunity to experience public service at its most fundamental level by providing insight into the workings of infrastructure maintenance.

CON #22020 Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leaf and rubbish collection, tree planting and removal, assembly and disassembly of spectator stands, operation of lawn and grass cutting equipment
  • Support water and sewer work crews by painting fire hydrants and structures, providing laborer duties when necessary
  • Provide assistance to mechanics by picking up parts, handing over tools and records maintenance
  • Participate in the oversight of residential drop-off program, assist in general laborer duties
  • Assist field engineers with surveying and project management, scanning/organizing documents and office support
  • Paint fences and other structures, assist with paving and roadway maintenance and washing trucks
  • Provide custodial support and general labor duties including, stripping, waxing and buffing floors, and general cleaning
Requirements

  • Trades Assistant positions require all applicants be over 18 years of age
  • Applicants under 18 years of age must submit an Employment Permit and a Town of Needham Employment Application
  • Individuals hired must complete the Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification
  • For positions requiring unsupervised contact with children, elderly, or disabled persons, Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) checks are required
  • Some positions require a valid driver's license, applicants will be required to present a copy of his/her valid driver's license during the interview
Supplemental Information

  • Temporary employment is anticipated to begin on or about May 31, 2022 (depending on the position) and conclude no later than August 30, 2022.
  • Qualified candidates are limited to five (5) days off (unpaid) during the duration of this temporary work assignment
  • Candidates must be willing to work in a labor-intensive environment and must be willing to get dirty
  • This temporary work assignment is limited to 40 hours per week with no opportunity of overtime
  • All individuals who worked for the Town of Needham in prior years, and who are interested in returning, must submit the appropriate application submissions as mentioned below. Interviews with the Division Superintendents, or their designees, will be scheduled throughout April.
  • Applicants will be contacted approximately one (1) week prior to the interview date and should plan on meeting for 30 minutes with the interview team
