Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is looking for a highly motivated person to fulfill a full-time (40h/week) Intern, Advanced Analytics position in Canada for fall 2022 (September - December).

Job Summary

The Intern, Advanced Analytics is responsible for assisting the Smart Terminal Program team and helping analyze operations and operating models to optimize processes in Intermodal Terminal Operations. The incumbent will perform various project-related activities including data mining, analysis, evaluation, recommendation, planning and execution of small projects as well as assisting in the development of processes and programs to support the Smart Terminal Program team. The role supports the design and development of the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) dashboard, which will be used to monitor and improve Terminal Operations performance.

The internship is designed to be both educational and practical; the incumbent will learn how to take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting as well as gain a better understanding of the role that analytics can play in operations.

Major Responsibilities

  • Perform efficient data Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) with large multi-source datasets in preparation for data analytics initiatives
  • Identify, analyze, and interpret trends in complex data sets
  • Develop and maintain KPI dashboards
  • Collaborate with Operations team to identify opportunities as well as design and develop solutions for manual reports and process
  • Maintain and modify existing reports and create new reports based on customers’ requirements
  • Strive to find the best ways to visualize data and articulate results
  • Perform data entry and other clerical assignments as needed

  • Ability to analyze, model and interpret data
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and manage time
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced demanding environment and manage multiple priorities
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office: Excel and Access
  • Knowledge of Tableau, Python, Structured Query Language (SQL)*


  • Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Business Analytics or Information Technology
  • Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset
