The Automotive Lab Technician's position is primarily to provide support for the automotive faculty in order to support

the learning activities that take place in the automotive labs. The position is responsible for maintaining the

functionality and organization of automotive equipment, inventory of necessary supplies, and parts for vehicles.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assist the Automotive Faculty in organizing shop materials, equipment, vehicles and lab projects in order to

support the hands-on learning that takes place in the automotive labs.
  • Facilitate a preventive maintenance program for the automotive lab equipment including coordinating

maintenance activities with faculty, staff, students, and vendors to minimize equipment downtime
  • Provide mechanical support to maintain, inspect, repair and install equipment when needed. Coordinate work

done by internal departments such as facilities, IT, and external vendors to complete repairs and installations of

lab equipment.
  • Work with faculty and public on customer work orders.

Marginal Job Functions
  • Maintain inventories of vehicles, tools, equipment, preventive maintenance lubrication schedules and order

parts/supplies as required.
  • Assist the Automotive Faculty with the students in their labs as scheduled and approved ahead of time.
  • Projects as assigned by the Job Training Manager.


  • Associate's degree in automotive or related field, or equivalent experience, required.
  • Minimum of 4 State of Michigan automotive certifications, or willingness and ability to obtain them within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license required.

Work Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an Automotive Technician or closely related position within the automotive field.
