Community Support Worker (CSW)
" FieldType="SPFieldNote" --( AF is 31 year old man living close to Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast. AF is looking for person who has a calm, positive and extremely patient personality and an ability to build trusting and respectful relationships. This is a great opportunity to join a close-knit team and support AF to spend primarily Fridays and other on-call days in the community pursuing his favourite activities. He finds it hard to get through interactions and activities due to his Tourette syndrome and gets quite stuck in tics that he needs to complete, so the ability to convey serenity and an utter absence of pressure or concern while alongside him as a support worker, is key.
Duties and responsibilities
Supporting AF to pursue his favorite community based activities:
- Go hiking in parks or on beaches, spending time in nature.
- Visiting the Library and playing basketball or soccer.
- Enjoying a meal or a snack out at his favorite cafes.
- Meeting friends in the community.
- Accompanying AF to take the ferry, to or from Horseshoe Bay, to visit his family in Vancouver on occasional weekends.

Driver's license (Class 5); Use of personal vehicle for work
Preferred Training or Experience
- Prior experience supporting autistic individuals and/or Tourette syndrome.
- Excellent observational and assessment skills.
- Excellent critical thinking skills and high level of discernment in decision making and readjusting according to circumstances.
- Able to maintain a calm, serene composure under any circumstance.
- Excellent coping and, in the moment, problem solving skills.
- Has a positive attitude and can gently support Individual to work through frustrations.
- Ability to redirect negative conversations and frustrations.
- Has an excellent sense of humour and ability to have fun, be playful and maintain a positive attitude. Generally appreciative of the ridiculous.
- Ability to gently but firmly set limits.
- Prepared to be outdoors in weather under any circumstances.
- Ability to work collaboratively with and be supportive of a close knit team.
- Able be flexible, adaptable and creative.
Specific Training or Experience Required
Supporting People who get anxious; Ability to motivate, encourage and engage the interests of others.; Computer proficiency (email, Word, internet usage); - Mandt certification through Spectrum Society training
Expected Hours of Work
6 hrs per week on Saturdays from noon to 6pm plus on-call as needed which could include some weekend hours as well as weekday.
