Musicians (MUSNs) are responsible for promoting the image of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) throughout Australia and overseas as members of the Royal Australian Navy Band. There are six bands stationed around Australia. Two bands of full-time musicians are stationed at the Navy establishments HMAS Kuttabul, Potts Point, New South Wales and HMAS Cerberus, Western Port, Victoria. Four Reserve bands are stationed in Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart and Perth.
Navy Musicians will:
Perform as a member of a Navy band at ceremonial and Navy training parades
Provide musical entertainment offered by the Navy in the public interest and
Provide musical entertainment at official Navy functions
There are two avenues of entry for Musicians to join the Royal Australian Navy Band. They are:
Qualified Entry Sailor - non-degree (QES - non-degree) and
Qualified Entry Sailor - degree (QES - degree)
Instrument categories available include:
Flute and Piccolo, Oboe and Cor Anglais, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Cornet/Trumpet and Bugle, Trombone, Euphonium, French Horn, Tuba, Double Bass and Bass Guitar, Percussion, Piano, Voice and Guitar. All musicians are also trained on Parade Side-Drum and all have an obligation to serve at sea.
