Conservation Officer On Reserve (Marine) - ( Level 8) De Hoop Nr


This position is suited to a dedicated conservationist who would like to contribute meaningfully to the conservation of biodiversity through marine protected area management, law enforcement, environmental awareness and stakeholder relations on and around the De Hoop Nature Reserve and the Overberg Landscape Unit.The Conservation Officer will report to the Conservation Manager, De Hoop Nature Reserve in performance of their duties:RESPONSIBILITIES:KRA 1:Contribute to marine and coastal conservation action in the De Hoop Nature Reserve and MPA to enhance biodiversity resilience through targeted ecosystem conservation and restoration initiatives.This includes planning, implementation and monitoring of conservation efforts to protect and conserve functioning coastal, estuary and marine ecosystems, the associated species; in particular to CapeNature managed areas.Assist in the coordination of disaster management strategy and responses at reserve and landscape level.Assist in the development and implementation of organisational planning systems, innovative decision support tools and technologies; mainstreamed and fully integrated at reserve and landscape level.KRA 2:Contribute to marine and coastal conservation in the De Hoop Nature Reserve and MPA in ways that address biodiversity loss.This implies that marine and coastal ecosystems and key indicator species are prioritised, and thereby contributing to protected area management, including PA expansion targets where identified.To ensure full integration with landscape teams (integrating both Conservation Operations and Biodiversity Capabilities components) to promote and implement solution-based conservation orientated interventions.Ensure applied research (internal and external) related to marine and coastal ecosystems, is mainstreamed to influence planning and decision-making processesKRA 3:Contribute to and actively participate in marine and coastal conservation in De Hoop Nature Reserve and MPA to ensure compliance monitoring, enforcement operations.Predicting, minimising and mitigating risks due to unnatural and natural disasters.Ensuring that governance, risk management, compliance monitoring and enforcement operations are effective in achieving the objectives of associated legislation, policies, agreements and management plans,Coordination of reserve level agency partnerships, especially with regards to law enforcement and compliance monitoring.Advocate for behavioural change and promote voluntary compliance.Integrating innovation and technologies.Compile case dockets for SAPS when required and update the monthly Biodiversity Crime Unit Register.KRA 4:Contribute to marine and coastal conservation in theDe Hoop Nature Reserve and MPAto enhance biodiversity access and sustainable useThis includes the co-development, cooperative governance and implementation of a network of strategic and local partnerships, alongside Landscape Management teams; aimed at marine and coastal ecosystems and species conservation in the broad sense as well as directly supporting site specific conservation, eco-tourism, access and stakeholder learning operations.Addressing capacity and funding gaps, through proposal writing, presentations and liaison with potential funders.Identifying informed and sustainable non-extractive economic opportunities, aligned to the entitys directive to enhance access and socio-economic opportunities.Support for the implementation of targeted biodiversity economic activities to promote job creation, work opportunities, livelihood support in marine and coastal environments.Supporting initiatives which promote access to protected areas (marine and coastal areas) for recreational, educational and traditional purposes (ecotourism offering and access to communities).Contribute to stakeholder engagement and learning, from a marine and coastal perspective.KRA 5: Contribute to and support marine and coastal conservation in the region to ensure performance, governance, and advance knowledge exchanges, peer learning, capacity building, mentorship.Developing, coordinating and implementing an effective Marine and Coastal Change Management Programme, incorporating coaching, mentorship, capacity building of reserve and landscape operations teams, junior staff on issues, trends related to marine and coastal management.Collaboration with strategic partners to advance human resource development within the sector, in particular to marine and coastal environments.Research, development and implementation of creative innovative technologies or decision-support tools.Facilitating knowledge exchanges and peer learning opportunities, with full integration at landscape level.Implement Performance Management SystemEffective recruitment, induction, orientation, deployment, training and mentoring of staff.Provide opportunities for inter landscape experiential training.Ensure that supervised staff are empowered in order to carry out this function.Manage/Monitor allocated budget.Facilitate the management of all infrastructure and movables.Compilation and submission of monthly/quarterly reports.MINIMUMREQUIREMENTS:National Diploma Nature Conservation or relevant 3-years tertiary qualification. A marine science qualification will be advantageous.At least 5 years job-related experience with an emphasis on marine management.A valid EB drivers license15-Nautical Mile Skipper license with at least 3 years proven experience.Marine Radio operator qualification.Knowledge of environmental legislation.Bilingualism in two of the three official languages of the Western Cape.No criminal record.RECOMMENDATIONS:EMI/Peace Officer qualification.Surf Launch endorsement as part of skippers licenseSkipper license with night rating.COMPETENCIES:Willingness to work irregular hours, after-hours and perform stand-by duties.Thorough working knowledge of MS Office and QGIS (or equivalent).Good written, verbal, interpersonal and communication skills in English.Physical fitness to be able to perform strenuous activities.Must be able to swim.Firearm use competent.Kindly Note: Only suitable candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be considered.
