Research Group Leader: Industrial Systems Research GroupAbout the job:The CSIR has a vacancy fora Research Group Leader (RGL)in the Industrial Sensors impact area within the Manufacturing cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for building and developing a team of engineers, development of custom sensor-based technologies & products and to lead associated business development activities. This position is based in Pretoria. Lead the development of core engineering capabilities and their packaging for potential clients; Lead a team of researchers/engineers to deliver investment and client projects on brief, on budget and on time; Conduct business development / networking activities to attract funding from existing and new sources, including the building of sustainable relationships with clients, as well as the planning and costing thereof; Manage the research groups activities, involving aspects of investment, research & development projects, technology transfer, commercialisation, business development, HCD and transformation; Manage strategic stakeholder relationships for the research group in order to secure appropriate, integrated research & industry programmes; Contribute to strategic investment goal setting and development of Research Development & Innovation (RDI) strategy for the research group and impact area; Stay up to date on relevant technology trends with a view to achieving impact and growth. Promote a culture of SET excellence (quality and delivery) and provide RDI leadership across multiple disciplines; Ensure staff development, strategic HCD (profiles, capacity and development) to advance individual staff through their research careers, ensuring alignment with the impact area strategy; Deliver on personal and impact area KPIs, including profit and loss, quality, health safety & environment, HCD and transformation, as per agreed targets; Network with peers inside and external to CSIR; Contribute to the overall management activities of the impact area. Qualifications, skills and experience:A Masters degree in electronic engineering with at least eight years of proven experience working at a senior level in electronic product design, development and testing having worked at the system level as a lead developer of projects; From the above eight years experience five years should be as a lead engineer on product development projects, able to operate at a systems level; Proven experience in analogue & digital electronic design, including for high-speed digital hardware; Proven experience with firmware and embedded software development, including FPGA programming and debugging; Signal / image processing experience will be an advantage; Proven project management experience in electronic and software-based product development; Proven experience in business development of technical development projects. Good communication, presentation and report writing skills, Problem solving, facilitation and interpersonal skills in a goal orientated approach; Proven, creative ability to develop novel technology & product solution concepts; Proven ability to work in multiple application domains and conceptualise new product solutions to diverse client needs; Ability to network internally & externally to identify project opportunities and funding sources (i.e. business development); Ability to manage a team of development engineers in their personal career paths as well as in delivering development projects; Ability to provide thought leadership and high-level conceptualisation; Ability to work independently as well as in teams; An understanding of the research to market innovation value chain.
