Senior Cable Engineer (Routing)

Our client Scottish Power are seeking a Senior Cable Engineer (Routing) for an on-going contract role based in South Lanarkshire, although Hybrid working is an option.

Job Purpose Statement

Reporting to the Cable Engineering Group Head, the successful candidate will be responsible for carry
out routing studies (desktop studies, site visits/walk overs, surveys etc.) and provide solutions to assist
cable engineering department help deliver transmission projects (33kV and above voltage level) from
feasibility to detailed design and construction.
Responsible for projects of greater value and complexity within the portfolio whilst managing/supervising
and developing less experienced staff within the cable engineering department. This will include
assisting and providing the necessary information into specifications and designs for projects, innovation,
effective technical support, advice, coaching and input throughout the lifecycle of projects.

Accountability Statement

Responsible for all aspects of cable route studies (desktop, site visits/walk overs, surveys etc.).
? Responsible for analysing feasibility route to ensure it is a viable option considering all the external
factors thus increasing design and constructability confidence.
? Undertake desktop studies to identify possible routes. This shall take in consideration any special
engineering difficulties, pinch points, roads, traffic congestion, utilities, route length, cross
section/depths, or any other issues.
? Assist in deriving resolution of statutory, land or other consents regarding underground cable
? Working with the cable team to prepare documentation/specifications for all survey works
associated with cable system routing which are high in value, complex and business critical
? Working with the cable team to carryout technical assessment of tender submissions and report
? Undertaking investigation on all special engineering difficulties (SED’s) in the preferred cable route,
clearly highlighting all the recommendations from the results.
? All route options to be presented in a report format highlighting all the technical, commercial, and
environmental benefits. The preferred route will be discussed and selected by all stakeholders. This
information will be used in System Construction Authorisation and Project Technical Specifications.
? Assess engineering documentation, feasibility and compliance with client requirements and support
the preparation of accurate budgets. Recommend construction and outage programmes where
required in relation to cable circuits.
? Provide support to the Pre-Contract and Project Delivery teams on matters concerning cable route.
? Provide support for the resolution of cable routing related issues, analyse common faults, and prevent re-occurrence.
? Ensure all works and construction practices are in accordance with current legislation, policies, and
operational requirements.
? Perform all duties and promote internally and externally a strong emphasis on health, safety, quality
and environmental compliance and continuous improvement
? Drive industry best practice and technological advances within the project team/department. Assist
with evaluation and apply ‘new ideas’, technical developments, new equipment, new materials
and/or alternative-working methods to provide cost savings, efficiencies and improved safety.
? Mentor less experienced staff within the Department or Project Team.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Degree qualified in Engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
? Working towards membership of a professional institution.
? Proven experience and knowledge in carrying out cable or linear infrastructure routing studies
? Good inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships
with other individuals, departments, and businesses.
? Ability to implement, apply and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice in a design
? Ability to represent departments or project teams regarding cable route/engineering issues,
decisions, standards, or industry best practice

Planning & Organising

The ability to plan and engineer conflicting requirements and meet challenging deadlines.
? Ability to interrelate own discipline areas with outputs from other engineering solutions and
contribute to overall operable solution mitigating risk of gaps in end to end solution.
? Provide advice or solutions to assist less experienced members of staff without being involved in the
lifecycle of the project
? To conceptualise engineering solutions and provide the methodology and detailed thinking to turn
them into solutions for projects of greater value and complexity within the portfolio
? To provide cost effective solutions which meet client and regulatory requirements whilst considering
future technological improvements or regulatory changes.
? To provide technical solutions to unforeseen engineering problems that mitigate program slippage

Minimum Criteria

Engineering degree or equivalent experience
? Proven significant experience in carrying out cable or linear infrastructure
route studies (desktop, site visits/walkovers) whilst delivering engineering
solutions to high value and complex projects
? Surveying and construction experience
? Proven abilities to:
o Communicate and influence managers, senior managers, and key
o Writing clear and concise reports and documents covering technical,
environmental, and commercial subjects.
