Technical Manager

BASIC SALARY: Up to £80,000

JOB DESCRIPTION: Technical Manager, Design Manager, Engineering Manager, Project Manager - special purpose machinery

This is a brand-new Technical Manager role to lead a multi-disciplined R&D team made up of Mechanical, Electrical and Controls Engineers.

This covers the development of new machines and blank page concept to completion - so you'll need a broad technical understanding, a flare for innovation, want to remain hands on and you will need to lead by example. The team will rely on you to prove, solve and develop solutions for them.

You will be running 1-2 projects at any one time with an expectation to deliver within 3-10 months.

You'll lead the team of seven Engineers. R&D aside, they also cover machine test on build, some FAT testing of customer sites, compile BOM's, all associated design documentation and adhere to CE/UKCA compliance.

Depending on complexity, once you have handed over to production, a machine build can take up to 8 weeks. All of our components and parts are bought in, but we do all the fitting, build and assembly on our site in Bedford.

Our machines value from £10,000 up to £500,000; and we sell on average 10-20 machine per calendar year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Technical Manager, Design Manager, Engineering Manager, Project Manager - special purpose machinery

· Lead a team of seven R&D Engineers covering mechanical / electrical / controls & test
· Project manage the innovation of new special purpose machinery
· Problem solve complex issues within your team
· Have a solid technical engineering background
· Understand the roles of your team members to spread risk

PERSON SPECIFICATION: Technical Manager, Design Manager, Engineering Manager, Project Manager - special purpose machinery

· You will have previously driven the design and development of industrial special purpose machinery and managed or led a team of Design Engineers
· You'll have experience of machine innovation and developing new machinery from concept to completion (the full project life-cycle)
· Your background should cover redesign and redevelopment of special purpose machinery
· Any exposure you have to converting / rewinding machinery would be advantageous - but we don't expect you to have it

We're not hung up on your qualifications - but you'll probably be degree educated with considerable experience in a similar role. A purely mechanical background wouldn't be strong enough. Mechatronics would be perfect, but some combination of mechanical, electrical and software - maybe through education and further training would be perfect.
