Research Associate, Process Science-Upstream (Onsite)

The Upstream Process Science Department is a group of Scientists and Subject Matter Experts who specialize in the development, maintenance, remediation, and transfer of the production processes used in cGMP commercial manufacturing. This position is primarily a lab-based role which requires hands-on execution of upstream development, optimization and characterization experiments using small-scale models, along with analysis and interpretation of experimental data.


  • Supports upstream fermentation/cell culture experiments for process development and optimization
  • Assist in designing experiments related to development, scale-up, scale-down and characterization of fermentation and primary recovery processes
  • Interpret results and design studies for process improvements using statistical Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology
  • Provides upstream technical support for cGMP manufacturing
  • Provides scientific technical support for technology transfer of processes to manufacturing
  • Participates on working teams related to continuous improvements for the business
  • Communicates work through oral presentations and written documentation, including technical reports
  • Supports and initiates set-up, maintenance and operation of bioprocess equipment including: spectrophotometer, YSI, RP-HPLC, shake flasks, fermenters and tangential flow filtration
  • Preparation of media and buffers
  • Process data entry and data analysis


  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or relevant field with a minimum of 2 years of directly relevant Process Development and/or upstream experience required. Alternatively, a Master's Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or equally relevant field with some directly relevant Process Development and/or upstream experience will be considered.
  • Experience with yeast fermentation/cell culture operations and recovery processes, including shake flask expansion, small and large scale fermenter/bioreactor production, scale-up/scale-down, process transfer, and tangential flow filtration (TFF)
  • Familiarity with Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical data analysis
  • Proficient in cell culture and bioreactor operations with proper aseptic technique
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work with minimal supervision, and complete written- and verbally- assigned tasks following specific procedures
  • Ability to independently make decisions based on data, scientific knowledge and sound judgement
  • Team player with a can-do attitude, intellectual curiosity, organized, strong time management skills, ability to be flexible to business needs and self-starter
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral
  • Maintain a safe work environment in accordance with policies, procedures and regulations
