Research Assistant

Job Summary

Assists with the research, content development, data analysis and visualizations, and other related tasks of the major initiative ?America and the Re-Centering of the International Art Market: From Dealers to Collectors to Museums, 1880-1930? of the Project for the Study of Collecting and Provenance at the Getty Research Institute. Will conduct research of secondary and primary sources, including working closely with archival materials in special collections. Will execute analysis of data collected towards the project outcomes, applying knowledge of established standards and best practices in database construction, linking and analysis. Will interact closely with project managers, members of the Project for the Study of Collecting and Provenance, and guest researchers. Familiarity with digital humanities methods is a must, and an interest in American art history is a plus.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Conducts advanced research in libraries and special collections under the direction of project managers
  • Creates, analyzes and visualizes datasets using a range of digital humanities methods
  • Contributes to the development of the project by organizing/creating project documentation such as bibliographies and transcription spreadsheets, searching for and ordering texts, writing literature reviews, etc.
  • Requests images for research and potential publications; researches and obtains art and image permissions
  • Proofreads and edits as needed; may copyedit essays, author biographies, endnotes, etc.
  • Assists with creation of project updates and PowerPoint presentations
  • Participates in organizing workshops and assisting guest researchers by communicating with participants, preparing materials in advance, supplying requested materials


  • Bachelor's degree in digital art history, digital humanities related field or library and information systems; Master's degree preferred
  • 0-2 years experience in art historical or cultural heritage research; data curation; or digital art history/digital humanities projects (education may be considered)

  • Proficiency with data cleaning, standardizing with controlled vocabularies and data analysis
